‘‘Les Misérables’, based on Victor Hugo’s epic novel, must be one of the most well-known and best loved musicals of all time, and has been seen by over 60 million people. However, the first performances of the show in the 1980s were not well received, and it almost sank into obscurity.

Set against the backdrop of post-revolutionary France, the story examines the relationship between Inspector Javert, who sees the rigid application of the law as his religious duty, and Jean Valjean, ex-criminal, who vows to live a life of charity and self-sacrifice in repayment of a kind deed. His adopted daughter, Cosette, whom he rescues from the uncaring Thenardiers, falls in love with one of the student rebels, taking us to the heart of the barricades.
